Ocean City, New Jersey has surfing beaches and several surf shops with the latest in surfboards and surf apparel. The surf shops have a nice selection of name brand clothing and accessories. Surfing in Ocean City dates back to the time the late John Carey had his mahogany board inspired by legendary Hawaiian, Duke Kahanamoku. The first surf shop was reportedly established in 1962. Designated and guarded surfing beaches are located at the following locations: Waverly Boulevard, St. Charles Place and Seventh Street. Surfing is permitted on all beaches when lifeguards are off duty. Surfing contests are held frequently, with camps and board rentals available.
